What is Craft Freemasonry?
As well as being one of the World’s oldest secular fraternal societies, Freemasonry is an enjoyable association of like-minded people who work towards a common goal of being happy and communicating happiness to others. It also describes itself as "a particular system or Morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."
These are encountered during a series of 3 ritual ceremonies, performed in our Lodges. These rituals are said to be of great antiquity, drawing on many elements, including stonemasonry and legends of the Temple of King Solomon.
The purpose of the ceremonies is to seek to instil morality in us all by teaching and practising the highest standards of conduct in society. Freemasons strive to be good citizens, to practice the highest moral and social standards, and to be men or women of friendship, charitable disposition, and integrity. It is often said that Freemasonry… ‘Makes
good people better.’
While Freemasonry is not a
religion, all members must profess the belief in a Supreme Being. One
of the strengths of the Masonic Fraternity, is the diversity of
colours, classes and creeds it embraces. This is because we all share
the common bond of fellowship, which allows us to meet together
without religious or political differences coming between us.
Freemasonry is very much, an attitude of generosity of mind.
Joining
the Craft.
Those
with an interest in joining, are welcome to contact our Secretary by
email, stating the reasons for their interest. They should normally
be over 18 years of age and without serious criminal convictions.
Freemasonry promotes family values and is never used for personal
material gain.
Prospective members are normally interviewed by
experienced Brethren, and also invited to meet members of a Lodge
socially - often at a meal known in Masonry as a ‘Festive Board.’
We need to be satisfied that a member is able to commit time and
dedication to the Path of Masonic Learning.
The 3 Craft Degrees, in
our Order also form a portal to many other ‘Side,’ or ‘Higher’
Degrees which give more Light on the meaning of Freemasonry. These
are optional. The New Mason becomes a member of a growing
international community, which gives you many new friends with a
common interest.
